Students of Dhanamanjuri University took to the streets on June 13, staging a fiery protest against the administration’s handling of the semester examinations. The protest saw irate students setting fire to benches and desks in front of the administration block, demanding immediate changes to examination procedures.
The primary demand from the protesting students is the appointment of a new vice-chancellor and registrar. They are also calling for the semester examinations, originally scheduled for December 2023, to be conducted online. This delay, they argue, is due to an ongoing crisis that has disrupted the university’s academic calendar.
A student spokesperson, addressing the media, highlighted the frustrations of the student body. “The December 2023 exams have been delayed due to the crisis. Despite multiple discussions with the university authorities, they are pushing for an offline mode of examination, against the will of the students.”
The students insist that the examinations should be held online for all students, as opposed to the decentralized, department-level exams currently being enforced. “There’s inconsistency in the examination process,” the spokesperson added, “with some students being required to write exams offline at designated centers, such as DC offices, while others can take them online.”
The students’ union has issued a strong warning, threatening further agitation if their demands are not met. The protest, which escalated in front of the university’s administrative building, prompted the deployment of police forces to manage the situation and maintain order.
