Kuki-Zo MLA Vungzagin Valte passed away on Friday at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram after a prolonged struggle with injuries sustained during ethnic violence in May 2023. The hospital has not released an official statement, but tributes from political leaders have begun to pour in. Valte, who was 61 years old and a three-time legislator for the Thanlon constituency in Churachandpur district, was attacked by a mob while returning home from a meeting with then-Chief Minister N Biren Singh. Following the attack, he was airlifted to Delhi for advanced medical treatment and returned to Churachandpur in April last year after nearly two years of recovery. Despite his efforts, Valte’s health significantly declined, leading to a wheelchair-bound condition and speech difficulties.
On February 7, 2023, his health deteriorated further, prompting a transfer to Churachandpur Medical College and Hospital, where he was admitted to the ICU. Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh actively monitored Valte’s condition and ensured he received the necessary medical care. After an initial improvement, Valte was transported to Imphal and then to Delhi by air ambulance, escorted by fellow BJP legislators.
Valte, a former minister and adviser on tribal matters, was mourned by various political figures, including Manipur Congress leader K Meghachandra Singh, who expressed that Valte’s death is a significant loss for both his family and the people of Thanlon. Nagaland Rajya Sabha member S Phangnon Konyak also honored him, noting his dedication and contributions to public life.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, highlighting Valte’s commitment to serving the people and his efforts towards societal progress. In his tribute, Modi described Valte as an active and engaged MLA whose passing is a source of sadness, extending his thoughts to Valte’s family, friends, and supporters during this difficult time.
