The Ministry of Home Affairs has classified most of Manipur as a ‘disturbed area’ under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, as violence continue to rage in the state.
The gazette notification issued by the ministry stated that the decision followed a “further review of the law and order situation” in three states, including specified areas of Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh.
The notification, effective from October 1, 2026, said that the entire state of Manipur, excluding areas under 13 specified police stations, has been declared as a “disturbed area”.
This notification will be valid for six months unless revoked by the Centre.
The excluded areas in Manipur are those under the jurisdictions of Imphal, Lamphel, City, Singjamei, Patsoi and Wangoi police stations in Imphal West District; Porompat, Heingang and Irilbung police stations in Imphal East; Thoubal police station in Thoubal district; Bishnupur and Nambol police stations in Bishnupur district and Kakching police station in Kakching district.
