In a bid to draw national attention to the ongoing crisis, a joint student body in Manipur has called for a complete shutdown in Churachandpur district today, commemorating the second anniversary of the ethnic conflict that erupted on May 3, 2023. Shops, educational institutions, and transport services were closed, while security forces were deployed across the district to maintain law and order.
The student body reaffirmed its demand for justice, peace, and a political resolution to the ethnic tensions that have plagued the state for two years. Ahead of the anniversary, security measures have been tightened across the state. Police have intensified frisking and vehicle checks in key locations, including Imphal, Churachandpur, and Kangpokpi districts.
Additional security personnel have been stationed near Khuman Lampak in Imphal, where a significant Manipur People’s Convention is set to take place. Central forces are also present around Kangla Gate. “The heightened security is a precautionary measure to prevent any disruptive activities by anti-social elements,” said an official.
