Manipur Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen has condemned the reported killing of 17-year-old N.K. Wiphenbou in Tamenglong district and called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
In a statement, Kipgen said Wiphenbou, the son of N.K. Maihinlakbou of Upper Takou village under Tamei Sub-Division, was reportedly killed while travelling to Tamei to purchase essential items for his family. Describing the incident as deeply distressing, she said the loss of a young life under such circumstances was a matter of serious concern and stressed the need to ensure the safety of innocent civilians.
The Deputy Chief Minister extended her condolences to the bereaved family and appealed to all concerned to maintain peace and exercise restraint amid the prevailing security situation. She urged the authorities to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the incident and take appropriate legal action based on the findings.
Meanwhile, the All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM) strongly condemned the alleged killing and called on both the Manipur and Central governments to take concrete action against those responsible for attacks on civilians.
In a statement, ANSAM alleged that atrocities against Naga people and other indigenous civilians have continued in several conflict-affected areas, including parts of Kangpokpi, Tamenglong and Ukhrul districts. The organisation further alleged that Kuki armed militants operating under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) arrangement have been involved in attacks targeting civilians, including teachers, women, students and children.
ANSAM specifically referred to the death of N.K. Wiphenbou, alleging that the teenager from Upper Takou village was killed on September 21 in an area between Takou and Tama (Malek) villages under Tamei Sub-Division. The association urged authorities to take lawful action against those responsible and ensure accountability.
The student body also appealed for immediate and effective security arrangements for civilians living in vulnerable and conflict-affected areas, stressing that official statements and condemnations must be accompanied by concrete measures to protect lives and property.
According to ANSAM, meaningful enforcement of the law and accountability for criminal acts are essential to restoring confidence among affected communities. The organisation urged both the State and Central governments to demonstrate their commitment to civilian protection and the rule of law.
The Zeliangrong Welfare Association Delhi (ZWAD) also condemned the killing, describing the death of the unarmed teenager as a heinous violation of human life. The organisation expressed shock and grief over the incident and extended solidarity to the bereaved family.
