The economic blockade on National Highway-2 at Namdilong Gate in Kanglatongbi, under Sekmai Police Station in Imphal West district, continued on Thursday despite Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh appealing to protesters to withdraw the agitation. A large number of protesters, including men and women from both the Meitei and Naga communities, remained at the blockade site, enforcing restrictions on the movement of goods along the highway.
Volunteers were seen frisking and checking vehicles transporting essential commodities and other goods travelling between Imphal and Kangpokpi. The blockade affected the movement of goods and commercial vehicles on National Highway-2, one of Manipur’s key supply routes linking the Imphal Valley with the hill districts and neighbouring states. Authorities said passenger vehicles and emergency services continued to be monitored, while the overall situation remained under close observation.
Security personnel were deployed at the site to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incidents during the protest.
