Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) plans to invest ₹2,449 crore, or about $255.6 million, to develop and operate a natural gas pipeline connecting Kochi in Kerala with Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu. The investment is part of India’s broader efforts to expand its natural gas infrastructure, strengthen regional connectivity and increase the share of gas in the country’s energy mix as it seeks cleaner fuel alternatives. The proposed 424.65-kilometre pipeline will run through Kochi, Kanyakumari and Thoothukudi and will have a total capacity of 6.84 million standard cubic metres per day (MMSCMD). Of this, 1.71 MMSCMD will be designated as common carrier capacity, allowing access to other eligible users. The project is expected to strengthen natural gas connectivity across southern India and support the wider development of gas-based industries and energy consumption in the region. The investment also highlights IOC’s role in expanding the country’s gas transmission network as India seeks to improve access to natural gas and diversify its energy sources.
