Imphal-based startup Akumen Artificial Intelligence (AI) has developed an innovative AI-powered smart glasses system, INSIGHT, aimed at improving independence and accessibility for visually impaired individuals. The device was showcased before Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla during a meeting at Lok Bhavan on July 15.
Akumen AI founder Thiyam Akuvan, a computer science engineer from Manipur, briefed the Governor on the startup’s mission to develop affordable assistive technologies that can improve the daily lives of persons with disabilities.
INSIGHT is designed to help blind and low-vision users perform everyday tasks by reading printed text, identifying objects, and providing assistance without requiring constant support from others. The wearable device supports 22 Indian languages, including Manipuri, making it more accessible for users across different linguistic backgrounds.
Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla appreciated Akumen AI’s efforts in applying emerging technologies for social benefit and praised the startup’s commitment to inclusive innovation. He expressed hope that such locally developed solutions would enhance accessibility and empower persons with disabilities in Manipur.
Supported by the Startup Manipur initiative, which provides incubation, mentoring, and funding assistance to young entrepreneurs, Akumen AI’s innovation highlights the growing potential of local technological talent. The development of INSIGHT marks a significant step towards creating affordable, indigenous assistive solutions and expanding opportunities for visually impaired individuals through artificial intelligence.
