The 8th session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly began in Imphal on Wednesday with Saitu MLA Haokholet Kipgen and Saikul MLA Kimneo Haokip Hangshing attending the House in person for the first time since the ethnic conflict began in May 2023. Their physical participation marks a significant development after more than three years during which Kuki-Zo legislators had not attended Assembly proceedings in person. Kipgen said he was happy to return to the House after a prolonged absence. Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen participated in the session virtually. Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh welcomed the return of the two legislators, describing it as a positive step towards strengthening unity and peace in the state. He said the development reflected growing efforts to address the trust deficit between communities and reiterated his government’s commitment to inclusive dialogue and reconciliation. Since the formation of the new government under Singh on February 4, 2026, Kuki-Zo MLAs had participated in earlier Assembly sittings through virtual means. Their return to the Assembly in person is being viewed as an important step towards restoring political engagement and encouraging efforts for peace and reconciliation in Manipur.
