Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Thursday visited the residence of 54-year-old musician Chongtham Vikram Singh, who died after allegedly being assaulted in Delhi on September 7, and met his bereaved family.
The Chief Minister, accompanied by Thangmeiband MLA Khumukcham Joykishan Singh, visited the family at Thangmeiband Lourungpurel Leikai in Imphal West.
Khemchand Singh and Joykishan Singh expressed their condolences to Vikram’s parents and other family members and shared their grief. They also interacted with the family and assured them of all possible support.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, MLA Joykishan said every possible effort would be made to ensure justice for Vikram.
He said various sections were extending support for swift action given the seriousness of the incident. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju has also urged the Delhi Police to file the charge sheet within eight days, he added.
“Justice for Vikram will surely be delivered. We need action so that no person from the Northeast becomes a victim of brutal killing or attack in mainland India,” Joykishan said.
He said Vikram’s life could not be brought back, but necessary steps must be taken to prevent similar incidents involving people from the Northeast from recurring elsewhere in the country.
Vikram was allegedly assaulted in the early hours of September 7 outside his residence in Kilokari village in South Delhi after he objected to alleged disorderly behaviour, shouting and public consumption of alcohol.
He later succumbed to injuries sustained in the assault.
Vikram was the son of retired veterinary doctor Chongtham Birendrakumar and renowned singer Chongtham Ongbi Kamala. He is survived by his wife, Chongtham Joshna.
