Manipur State Commission for Women Drives Menstrual Health Awareness at Adimjati Shiksha Ashram

The Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) successfully observed International Menstrual Hygiene Day on Thursday at the ST Girls’ Hostel of Adimjati Shiksha Ashram, Imphal. Moving forward under the global theme, “Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld,” the event focused on promoting reproductive health, breaking systemic taboos, and ensuring dignity for young women.

The programme was attended by key presidium members, including MSCW Chairperson Th. Tiningpham Monsang, Member S.K. Sophia, and Member Secretary cum Additional Director of DIPR, W. Phajatombi Devi.

Addressing the gathering, Chairperson Th. Tiningpham Monsang emphasized that the Commission actively conducts outreach seminars to educate women across the state alongside managing women-related legal cases. Highlighting the strategic significance of the venue, she noted that the hostel accommodates tribal girls from various districts of Manipur, including many from hill areas who are currently residing there due to the prevailing situation in the state. Monsang expressed optimism that these students would carry vital health messages back to their respective communities.

The Chairperson further explained the symbolism of May 28, representing the average 28-day menstrual cycle and 5-day period duration. She urged society to dismantle the shame and stigma surrounding menstruation, which frequently lead to severe health complications if improperly managed.

During the event, Member Secretary W. Phajatombi Devi delivered the welcome address, encouraging the ninety participating students to discuss menstrual health openly and seek medical advice without hesitation. The observance also featured technical sessions where experts, including a sports nutritionist and medical professionals, spoke extensively on nutrition, mental well-being, and preventive healthcare practices. MSCW assured that it will continue organizing similar welfare and empowerment programs for women and girls throughout Manipur.
