Fresh violence in Manipur’s Kamjong district has left a woman dead and prompted the administration to impose prohibitory orders in Chassad village. The victim, identified as Domkhonei Touthang, succumbed to bullet injuries on Friday night. Reports from the area indicated that gunfire and incidents of arson continued through the night, with several houses allegedly set ablaze. However, the exact extent of the damage remains unclear.
In response to the deteriorating situation, the district administration invoked Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, banning the assembly of five or more persons, carrying of weapons and unnecessary movement within a 400-metre radius of the Chassad Police Gate Junction. Security personnel, magistrates and essential-service workers have been exempted from the restrictions.
The Kuki-Zo Women’s Forum, Delhi and NCR, condemned the killing and demanded an impartial probe. The organisation also appealed for support to the deceased’s family, including her five children.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a Rapid Action Force (RAF) head constable sustained minor injuries after unidentified persons hurled a grenade at the gate of B/107 RAF camp in New Lambulane, Imphal East district, on Thursday night. The injured personnel, Dhananjay Rai of Uttar Pradesh, received initial treatment at JNIMS before being shifted to Sheja Hospital. Authorities have yet to identify those responsible for the attack, and no group has claimed responsibility.
