Tensions have escalated in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district following an incident involving a Meitei cyclist’s attempt to traverse a Kuki-Zo area as part of a self-declared “Manipur Peace Route” from Delhi to Imphal. Local residents, particularly women, organized immediate protests along National Highway-2, blocking the route to prevent the cyclist, identified as Malem Thongam, from entering the district. Protesters deemed the timing of the bike’s journey offensive, especially during the Christmas season, and emphasized their commitment to maintaining peace amidst the already fragile situation.
The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) previously cautioned the authorities against permitting this cycling event, threatening that the Kuki-Zo community might not bear responsibility for any adverse outcomes if it proceeded despite the local opposition. Although the atmosphere at Brigadier M. Thomas Ground remained tense, it was controlled, with protestors maintaining their vigil and awaiting police intervention to enforce the stoppage of the cyclist. As of the latest report, the administration had yet to issue an official statement, and security forces continue to monitor the area closely to ensure law and order is preserved.
