Shija Hospitals pays homage to family of deceased organ donor

Shija Hospitals paid a profound tribute to the family of the late Pebam Deben Singh, 56 years, of Singjamei, Imphal West. Following a road traffic accident on February 2 and confirmation of brain death through two positive apnea tests on February 3, the family came forward for organ donation, transforming a moment of profound loss into an enduring gift of life.
This selfless decision marked Shija Hospitals’ fifth deceased organ donation and the first successful organ donation arising from a medico-legal case in the region. The procedure was conducted overnight through coordinated efforts across multiple departments of Shija Hospitals, including the Department of Urology and Transplant Surgery, Dr. Somorendro Paonam and Dr.Mahele Maharabam; the Department of Anaesthesiology comprising Dr. Kennedy Taiyengjam, Dr.Kajal Momin, Dr. Ananda Ngangom, Dr. Tongbram Yashobanta, and Dr. Linthoingambi Samjetsabam; with specialist involvement from Dr. Guliver Potsangbam, Nephrologist, and Dr. Gautam Chabungbam, Neurosurgeon, along with the Nursing and Administrative teams.
The process was further supported by MOHAN Foundation, the Government healthcare authorities, the Manipur Police Department, the Manipur Traffic Control Police, the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, and the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences. Through this act of generosity, two kidneys were transplanted at Shija Hospitals and one at JNIMS, one liver was retrieved for transplantation, and two corneas were donated. The family’s selfless decision brought hope and renewed possibility to several patients and their families.
This milestone further reinforced Shija Hospitals’ leadership in renal care, having completed 126 kidney transplants to date, including the first deceased donor kidney transplant in North East India, the first ABO incompatible kidney transplant in the region, and five kidney transplants in Tripura in collaboration with AGMC, Agartala. The dialysis service currently supports 448 patients and conducts approximately 140 sessions daily, including night shifts, with 40 additional machines being added.
