On the first day of the Class XII Examination 2026 conducted by the Council of Higher Secondary Education Manipur (COHSEM), tension erupted at Wabagai Higher Secondary School examination centre in Kakching district following reports that some students allegedly tore answer scripts, attendance sheets and admit cards and set them on fire. According to sources, the incident occurred on the first day of the examination of English paper. Students of Langmeidong Higher Secondary School were appearing for the examination at this centre. A total of 224 candidates were seated for the exam. A COHSEM flying squad team along with CSO teams authorized by COHSEM were present to ensure smooth conduct of the examination.
After the examination concluded peacefully, some students reportedly re-entered the school campus.
It is reported that a few students approached the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the centre and allegedly demanded more additional time claiming they might fail. When the centre OC clarified that additional time could not be granted and that examination rules did not permit such requests, some students allegedly became agitated. In the commotion, a few students reportedly tore examination documents and answer scripts and set them ablaze near the gate area. On receiving information, the Officer-in-Charge of Hiyanglam Police Station rushed to the spot and attempted to bring the situation under control. Subsequently, the Superintendent of Police (SP), Kakching district, Priyadarshini Laishram, along with two Additional SPs and the SDPO Kakching, arrived with a large police team and brought the situation under control.
Meanwhile, Citizens Association for Rural Development (CARD), Wabagai and Social and Economic Development Organisation (SEDO), Hiyanglam strongly condemned the incident related to the Class XII examination at Wabagai Higher Secondary School. Speaking to the media, Nameorakpam Binanta, Games and Sports Secretary of CARD Wabagai, stated that such untoward incidents at an examination centre are highly unfortunate. He appealed to concerned authorities, teaching staff and stakeholders to work together to ensure that similar incidents do not recur in the remaining examination days. Both CARD Wabagai and SEDO Hiyanglam further urged students not to indulge in disruptive activities and to maintain discipline so that the examination process can be completed smoothly.
