Manipur rolled out a warm welcome for Commonwealth Games 2026 weightlifting medallists Sorokhaibam Bindyarani Devi and Chanambam Rishikanta after the two athletes returned to Imphal from Glasgow. They were received at Imphal International Airport on August 10 following their medal-winning performances at the Games.
Officials from the Directorate of Youth Affairs and Sports, members of the All Manipur Weightlifting Association, relatives, supporters and well-wishers were present at the airport to welcome the athletes. The two weightlifters were greeted with garlands and felicitated by those gathered.
Bindyarani secured bronze in the women’s 58-kg weightlifting event, while Rishikanta bagged silver in the men’s 60-kg category.
After her arrival, Bindyarani thanked her parents, coaches and supporters for their contribution to her journey and success at the international level. She said the achievements of women athletes from Manipur showed their potential when they are provided with consistent encouragement and support.
Bindyarani also highlighted the importance of continued support for women athletes, saying sustained backing is essential to help them achieve greater success in competitive sports.
Rishikanta said he had travelled to the Commonwealth Games with the ambition of winning gold. Although he had to settle for silver, he described the medal as a “dream come true”. He added that he would put in greater effort to improve his performance and target better results in future competitions.
Naorem Praveen Singh, Secretary and Commissioner of Youth Affairs and Sports, congratulated Bindyarani and Rishikanta for their achievements. He said their performances were an example of how determination and perseverance can help athletes overcome difficulties and reach their goals.
Singh also praised the contribution of women from Manipur at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. According to him, women from the state have established themselves across different sectors and have consistently delivered strong performances in sports.
He further announced that weightlifters Saikhom Mirabai and M Jadumani Singh have been confirmed for the upcoming Asian Games, adding another achievement to Manipur’s weightlifting record.
