Manipur observed Patriots’ Day to honour the heroes of the 1891 Anglo-Manipur War, paying tribute to Crown Prince Bir Tikendrajit Singh and Thangal General, who were publicly hanged by the British on August 13, 1891. The commemorations began with floral tributes at Hicham Yaicham Pat, Thangal Temple, and the statue of Thangal General, followed by ceremonies at Kangla Fort and Shaheed Minar, where Manipur Rifles contingents accorded a guard of honour and gun salute. Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh led dignitaries in offering homage, with the Governor calling on citizens to draw strength from the patriots’ sacrifices and use diversity as a source of strength rather than division. He urged the youth to carry forward the legacy of bravery through unity, education, and constructive action toward a peaceful and prosperous Manipur. Echoing these sentiments, Chief Minister Singh highlighted that the dedication of the 1891 heroes continues to inspire the public and urged collective efforts to preserve the state’s heritage while working for progress. On the occasion, the Chief Minister’s Police Medal for Gallantry and Outstanding Devotion to Duty were also announced, with observances extending across district headquarters in Manipur, including Senapati, as well as in locations outside the state like New Delhi.
