Amid the worsening flood situation in Upper Assam, particularly in Charaideo, Sivasagar and Jorhat districts, the Indian Army has launched ‘Operation Jal Rahat’ to assist civil authorities in rescue and relief operations.
Official sources said that multiple columns of the Army and the Assam Rifles have been deployed for search and rescue operations, while the Indian Air Force (IAF) has been kept on standby as the flood situation continues to deteriorate.
Notably, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had on Sunday requested the Indian Army and Indian Air Force to be on standby amid the worsening flood situation in order to assist in the evacuation and rescue of stranded flood-hit people in the three districts.
The Chief Minister had also directed ministers Ajanta Neog, Bimal Bora, Keshab Mahanta and Sushanta Borgohain to immediately reach the affected areas, supervise relief efforts and ensure that every affected family receives timely assistance.
According to official sources, Army personnel, working alongside the state administration and disaster response teams, have already rescued several stranded residents from inundated areas.
The deluge has also disrupted rail links after floodwaters damaged and toppled sections of railway tracks. At least two embankments have been breached, inundating large areas and affecting thousands of villagers across eastern Assam.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on Monday morning said at least over 1.70 lakh people across 12 districts remain affected by the current wave of floods with the situation worsening on Sunday. The cumulative flood-related death toll in the state this year has risen to five.
