A wave of shock and grief has gripped the Charhajare area of Manipur’s Kangpokpi district following the brutal murder of a 63-year-old woman during a robbery in the early hours of Monday. The deceased, identified as Puspa Devi, wife of Nakul Poudel, was found dead at her residence under the jurisdiction of the Gamnom Sapermeina police station.
Preliminary reports indicate that unidentified assailants broke into the victim’s home and attacked her with a blunt object. The attackers reportedly fled the scene with a significant amount of gold ornaments, cash, and other valuable household items. According to police officials, Puspa Devi sustained visible and fatal head injuries, suggesting she was targeted during the commission of the robbery.
Following the discovery of the body, authorities conducted a thorough inquest in the presence of a magistrate, ensuring full video documentation of the crime scene. The victim was subsequently transported to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) hospital in Imphal for post-mortem formalities. Her remains have since been handed over to her grieving family members for the performance of last rites.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, particularly among the Gorkha community. The Manipur Gorkha Welfare Union and the Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangha (BGP) Manipur state branch have issued strong statements condemning the killing. Describing the act as “barbaric and inhuman,” the organizations noted that such crimes reflect a disturbing disregard for human life and the safety of elderly citizens.
Gorkha leaders have formally urged the state government and law enforcement agencies to expedite the investigation. They are demanding the immediate arrest of the perpetrators and the recovery of the looted property to ensure justice for the bereaved family. As of now, police have intensified their search for the suspects, and the local community remains on high alert as they mourn the loss of one of their own.
