In a major political development, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has strongly welcomed the Centre’s decision to constitute a High-Level Committee to study demographic changes across the country. Lauding the initiative as a “historic step,” the Chief Minister expressed his profound gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for addressing a long-standing concern that deeply impacts border states like Manipur.
The initiative traces back to the Prime Minister’s declaration of a “High-powered Demography Mission” on August 15, 2025, which subsequently received Union Cabinet approval on September 11, 2025. According to the Manipur Chief Minister, this high-level intervention is both timely and crucial for safeguarding the state’s socio-cultural fabric.
Echoing the sentiments of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the Chief Minister emphasized that abnormal demographic shifts are not merely local issues. Instead, they pose a severe threat to national security, India’s sovereignty, law and order, and the preservation of indigenous tribal societies.
The High-Level Committee is tasked with conducting a comprehensive, nationwide assessment of demographic alterations driven primarily by illegal immigration and other unnatural factors. Assuring full state cooperation, the Manipur government has pledged to assist the panel in its investigation. For a state that has frequently grappled with cross-border migration and social unrest, this central intervention is being viewed as a definitive roadmap toward long-term stability and structural protection.
