Manipur Director General of Police Mukesh Singh on Friday visited violence-affected areas in Ukhrul district to assess the ground situation and review security arrangements. Accompanied by the ADGP (Law and Order) and senior district police officials, Singh visited Leplen, Sinakeithei and Litan, where he inspected security deployments and assessed prevailing conditions. He held detailed discussions with field commanders of the Manipur Police, 6th Manipur Rifles, Border Security Force and Central Reserve Police Force, while also meeting village authority members to hear their security concerns. According to the Manipur Police, the visit reinforced command-level oversight and ensured that security forces remain strategically deployed and prepared to protect local residents. The three areas have experienced heightened ethnic tensions and armed clashes amid the renewed Naga-Kuki conflict in the region. Sinakeithei, a Tangkhul Naga village, has witnessed incidents including arson and exchanges of gunfire, while Kuki-inhabited Leplen, bordering Kangpokpi district, has also reported repeated clashes and crossfire. Litan, a mixed Tangkhul and Kuki settlement along the Imphal–Ukhrul highway, has faced intermittent firing, blockades and growing community tensions. The area has emerged as a focal point of the renewed violence, which intensified following an incident in February 2026. A reported assault in Litan on February 7 was followed by the burning and destruction of more than 20 houses, including government quarters, the following night. Violence subsequently spread across Ukhrul and neighbouring Kamjong, while a later ambush in Kangpokpi that killed three Thadou church leaders and a driver further escalated tensions. The DGP’s field visit comes as authorities continue efforts to strengthen security, monitor sensitive areas and maintain the safety of communities affected by the prolonged conflict.
