A joint operation conducted by the Assam Police and the Assam Rifles led to the arrest of a husband-wife duo from Manipur and the recovery of arms and explosives from a rented house at Tarapur 6th Block near Ramnagar in Silchar on May 7, officials said.
Providing details of the operation, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Rajat Kumar said the accused were tracked through mobile phone location data before being apprehended during an overnight raid.
“By tracing their mobile locations, we apprehended both of them last night. The operation was jointly conducted by Assam Police and Assam Rifles,” the officer said.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Laishram Tiken Meitei and Monalisha Chanu, both residents of Churachandpur.
During the search operation, security personnel recovered a 9mm Italian pistol, five live rounds of ammunition, and a Chinese grenade from the couple’s rented accommodation.
According to local sources, the duo had been staying in the locality as tenants for nearly one and a half months.
The recovery of sophisticated weapons and explosives from a densely populated residential area triggered concern among residents and prompted heightened security measures in the locality.
Police have launched a detailed investigation to determine whether the arrested couple had links with any banned militant outfit or underground organisation.
Both accused are currently being interrogated in custody.
