Normalcy Returns to Manipur’s Churachandpur After Two Days of Protests

Normalcy gradually returned to parts of Manipur’s Churachandpur district on Saturday morning after two days of protests, police said. The demonstrations, which turned violent, were largely limited to the stretch between Tuibong and Kangvai within Churachandpur town.
According to officials, the situation was more contained compared to earlier episodes of unrest, when disturbances had spread across the entire district headquarters. Security forces remained deployed in sensitive areas to prevent any fresh flare-ups.
The protests erupted on Thursday following political developments in the State, after three BJP legislators from the Kuki-Zo and Hmar communities joined Meitei MLAs to form a government in the conflict-hit region. The move triggered strong reactions among sections of the local population.
Authorities said the situation is being closely monitored and appealed to residents to maintain peace as normal life slowly resumes in the district.
