Proud Moment for Manipur: CM Congratulates Wheelchair Basketball Star Ritu Chanu

Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Saturday, May 9, extended his heartiest congratulations to wheelchair basketball player Irengbam Ritu Chanu following her selection for the Indian national team. Chanu is set to represent the country in the women’s wheelchair basketball event at the prestigious 2026 Commonwealth Games, scheduled to be held in Glasgow, Scotland.

In a congratulatory post on X (formerly Twitter), the Chief Minister praised Chanu’s exceptional journey and her ability to overcome immense challenges. Ritu Chanu, the daughter of I. Ibochouba Meitei from Bishnupur district, has emerged as a symbol of resilience in the state’s sporting landscape. Singh remarked that her selection is a testament to her “unparalleled courage” and determination to excel on the international stage despite facing significant odds.

“Her determination and unparalleled courage despite all odds is really commendable,” the Chief Minister stated. He further emphasized that Chanu’s achievement is not only a proud moment for her family but also for the entire state of Manipur and the nation. Her success highlights the growing prominence of para-sports in the region and serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes who face physical or socio-economic adversities.

The Chief Minister took the opportunity to reaffirm the state government’s steadfast commitment to supporting athletes from all backgrounds. He noted that Manipur, often referred to as the “powerhouse of Indian sports,” continues to produce world-class talent because of the grit of its people and the government’s efforts to create competitive platforms. Singh assured that the state would continue to provide the necessary encouragement and infrastructure to ensure that talented athletes can compete effectively at both national and international levels.

As Ritu Chanu prepares for the global stage in Glasgow, the government’s acknowledgment underscores the importance of inclusive sports promotion. By celebrating the achievements of para-athletes like Chanu, the state aims to foster an environment where “unbeatable spirit” is prioritized over physical limitations, ensuring that Manipur remains a leading contributor to India’s international sporting glory.
