Security Forces Foil JFD March to Assembly

A group of volunteers associated with the Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) were prevented from advancing towards the Manipur Legislative Assembly Complex after security personnel intercepted them at Thangmeiband in Imphal. The volunteers had assembled in the area intending to hold a protest demonstration while the seventh sitting of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly was in progress. Participants carried placards and banners highlighting their opposition to the proposed census exercise before implementing the National Register of Citizens (NRC). As the group attempted to proceed towards the Assembly premises, security forces stationed along the route stepped in and blocked their movement at Thangmeiband, preventing them from approaching the legislative complex.

Officials maintained strict security arrangements in the vicinity to ensure that the demonstrators did not move closer to the Assembly during the ongoing session. Despite the attempted march, the situation in the area remained peaceful, with security personnel keeping the gathering under close watch. The organization has been demanding the ongoing census process be deferred until illegal immigrants are properly identified, with 1951 set as the base cut-off year for determining citizenship. JFD had already submitted a memorandum to the union Home minister on December 15, 2025, urging the Centre to postpone the census in Manipur until illegal immigrants are detected and the state’s ongoing conflict is resolved.
