19 detained in Imphal East for street violence and public disruption

In a firm response to escalating tensions, Manipur Police on June 10 detained 19 individuals in Imphal East district for their involvement in incidents of street violence and public disorder. According to officials, the group had been blocking roads, harassing commuters, and disrupting normal life in several localities, with many reportedly under the influence of alcohol. The disturbances caused widespread inconvenience, leading to traffic disruptions and raising serious concerns over public safety. Police described the acts as illegal and warned of strict legal action against anyone found violating the law.

In a public appeal, the Manipur Police urged residents, particularly the youth, to refrain from engaging in such anti-social activities that could damage their future. “Manipur Police urge all, especially the youth, to steer clear of such unlawful and anti-social activities. Engaging in such behaviour can lead to legal consequences that may adversely affect one’s future and career prospects,” read a post on the police’s official handle on X (formerly Twitter). Authorities reiterated their commitment to upholding law and order while calling for cooperation from the public. “We appreciate the support of the community and are dedicated to ensuring peace across Manipur,” a police spokesperson said.

In a separate development, security forces arrested three active militants linked to different insurgent groups in Tengnoupal district on June 9. The operation was conducted in the Pantha area under Moreh Police Station. The arrested militants have been identified as Laisharm Rakeshwar Singh (21) from Torbung Waikhurok, Bishnupur district, associated with PREPAK (Pro); Sharangthem Koireng (25) of Kakmeiyai, Thoubal district, linked to KYKL; and Laikham Amujao Singh alias Salai (22) from Sekmai, Imphal West district, affiliated with KCP (Noyon). Police sources said the arrests were the result of sustained surveillance and intelligence inputs.
