Manipur Police has arrested 21 people for their alleged involvement in violent incidents during a protest rally held on April 18 in Imphal West district, officials said.
The rally, which took place along the Imphal–Jiribam road between Patsoi and Sagolband, turned violent as some protesters reportedly resorted to stone pelting and used petrol bombs, catapults and boulders against security personnel. The situation escalated quickly, leading to clashes between demonstrators and security forces.
According to officials, several government vehicles were damaged during the unrest. At least three personnel from the 232 Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) sustained serious injuries in the incident. Security forces later managed to bring the situation under control after dispersing the crowd.
Police said those arrested are being questioned and further action will be taken based on the investigation. Authorities have not ruled out more arrests as they continue to identify others involved in the violence.
In a separate development, police also confirmed the arrest of a member of Arambai Tenggol for allegedly sharing provocative content on social media. The accused, identified as Tensubam Lamyanba Meitei (23) from Imphal East, is accused of posting messages that included threats and calls for violence.
