Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed the State Legislative Assembly that a total of 1,679 illegal immigrants have been repatriated from Assam to Bangladesh over the last two years. Providing a detailed written reply to a query raised by All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Badruddin Ajmal regarding the state’s ongoing border enforcement and “push back” operations, the Chief Minister—who also oversees the state’s Home and Political Departments—emphasized that all deportations were strictly carried out in full accordance with constitutional law and direct guidelines issued by the Union Government.
To address human rights safeguards and clarify the administration’s judicial boundaries, Chief Minister Sarma explicitly stated that the state follows rigorous legal protocols before executing any deportation order. He clarified that no individual identified as an illegal immigrant is sent back to the neighboring country if they have an active appeal regarding their citizenship status pending before the Gauhati High Court or the Supreme Court of India. This statement highlights the government’s dual approach of balancing intensive night-shift border policing and regular multi-district crackdowns on undocumented residents with total compliance toward active, higher-level judicial reviews.
