A male tiger has been camera-trapped in Assam’s Dihing Patkai National Park, confirming the presence of the big cat in the region’s rainforest ecosystem, Environment and Forests Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah said on August 19.
The tiger was captured during a camera-trap survey carried out by the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) in collaboration with the Margherita West Forest Range under the Digboi Forest Division.
Forest officials had earlier detected pug marks believed to be those of a tiger in the area. The latest camera-trap photograph has now provided scientific confirmation of its presence inside the national park.
Mallabaruah said the discovery reflects the sustained patrolling, surveillance and monitoring undertaken by forest officials and frontline staff.
The record is considered significant for Dihing Patkai, one of Assam’s important rainforest habitats, and highlights the rich wildlife diversity sustained by the protected landscape.
