Village coordination meetings were organized by the Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya boundary with the headmen and inhabitants of various border villages under its Area of Responsibility (AOR). The discussion was held in view of the numerous acts of violence and political instability occurring in Bangladesh, a neighboring country.
People living near the border were made aware of the continuing disturbance in Bangladesh at the meeting. They have also been urged to support the BSF in managing the border effectively.
In the event that border haats are reopened, officials stated that the Border Security Force (BSF) and state police had exchanged intelligence inputs indicating a high probability of cross-border movements by Bangladeshis, banned militant groups, smugglers, and other unauthorized operations.
There are currently two border haats: Kalaichar in South West Garo Hills district and Balat in East Khasi Hills area.
