Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Saturday inaugurated Imphal’s first mechanised rotary parking facility at Nagamapal, near the Chunkhang Leirak entry, aimed at addressing the growing shortage of organised parking space in the city.
Speaking at the inauguration, Chief Minister Khemchand Singh stressed that peace and dialogue are essential for development in Manipur. He said sustainable development in the state would not be possible without peace, while peace itself requires dialogue and understanding among different communities.
The chief minister also called for a positive approach towards development and urged local residents and members of the market community to work collectively to ensure the smooth and effective functioning of the new parking facility.
Thangmeiband MLA Khumukcham Joykisan Singh, who delivered the presidential address, highlighted the difficulties faced by residents and traders due to limited parking space in the market area.
He said the government decided to establish the mechanised parking facility to address the problem and improve traffic management in the busy commercial area. Joykisan also praised the chief minister’s initiative to resume bus services across the state.
Addressing the issue of drinking water shortages in the Thangmeiband constituency, the MLA expressed hope that the problem would be resolved soon under the chief minister’s guidance.
Manipur Chief Secretary Dr Puneet Kumar Goel described the inauguration as an important milestone for Imphal. He said the Nagamapal facility is the first of four proposed mechanised parking facilities planned for the city.
Goel noted that, like other capital cities, Imphal is experiencing increasing pressure on available parking space due to rapid urbanisation and a growing number of vehicles.
He said the new facility would help meet the rising demand for organised parking and contribute to better management of traffic and public spaces in the city.
The inauguration programme was attended by Smart City CEO Thingbaijam Harikumar Singh, members of the bazaar community, government officials, staff and local residents.
The facility is expected to provide a more organised parking solution in the Nagamapal area and ease congestion in one of Imphal’s busy commercial zones.
