A massive landslide triggered by incessant rainfall has completely disrupted traffic along the crucial Imphal-Silchar National Highway (NH-37) in Manipur’s Tamenglong district. The incident occurred early Wednesday morning between Shanti Khunou and Rengpang, near the 87 CRPF Battalion camp. Huge mounds of rocks, mud, and debris cascaded onto the highway, bringing vehicular movement to a complete standstill and severing a vital regional lifeline.
Hundreds of vehicles, including private cars and heavy goods carriers, are currently stranded on both sides of the blockage. A significant number of these are trucks transporting essential commodities from Silchar to Imphal via Jiribam. Fortunately, authorities have confirmed that no casualties or injuries have been reported so far. Prior to the collapse, security forces had successfully facilitated the safe movement of nearly 400 supply vehicles along the vulnerable stretch.
Restoration operations are now underway at a rapid pace. Personnel from the Ganpati Construction Company, which manages the maintenance of the Imphal-Jiribam road section, are on-site with heavy machinery to clear the accumulated debris. Local district officials have urged commuters to avoid all non-essential travel in the area and to strictly monitor official updates until the highway is safely reopened.
