Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has reiterated the government’s commitment to promoting indigenous sports and preserving the state’s rich cultural heritage, while highlighting the role of sports in fostering unity and social harmony.
Speaking at the valedictory function of the 13th Chief Minister Trophy Kang Tournament held at Manipur Kangshang in the Khuman Lampak Sports Complex, the Chief Minister said sports serve as a powerful platform to bridge differences among communities and promote social cohesion. He added that sporting activities bring together people from diverse backgrounds, strengthening bonds of friendship and mutual understanding.
The Chief Minister noted that Manipur has a strong tradition of excellence in sports and has contributed significantly to the national sporting landscape. He also highlighted the establishment of the National Sports University in Manipur, calling it a landmark recognition of the state’s sporting talent. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for supporting the initiative and said the institution is expected to further boost sports development in the region once all pending infrastructure projects are completed.
Focusing on indigenous games, Khemchand Singh emphasised the importance of preserving traditional sports such as Kang, which he described as one of the oldest games of Manipur with deep cultural roots dating back to the reign of King Loitongba. He said the Chief Minister’s Kang Trophy, initiated in 1999, continues to play a key role in promoting the traditional sport among younger generations.
The Chief Minister also announced a financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh from his personal account for the promotion of indigenous games, maintaining an annual tradition linked to the tournament.
The event concluded with appreciation for players, organisers and sports associations for their efforts in sustaining Manipur’s indigenous sporting heritage and promoting unity through sports.
