The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Saturday ordered re-polling at 11 booths in the Inner Manipur seat, a day after incidents of violence were reported from various polling booths in the constituency in the first of the seven-phase Lok Sabha elections.
An order issued by the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Manipur said the fresh polling will be held on Monday from 7 am to 5 pm at 11 booths.
The order said, “ECI has directed that the polling held on April 19, 2024 in respect of 11 polling stations of Internal Manipur constituency be canceled and fresh polling be held at the said centers on April 22, 2024 ” The date should be fixed.
Voting will be held for the following booths: Sajeb (A), Bamon Kampu (North-A), Khurai Thongam Leikai, Bamon Kampu (North-B), Bamon Kampu (South West), Khongman Zone-V (A), Irioshemba, Iroishemba Mamang Leikai, Iroishemba Mayai Lekai, Bamon Kampu (South East), and Khaidem Makha.
The northeastern state has been in the grip of ethnic tension since May last year, with clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities. More than 200 people have lost their lives due to the violence and the conflict is still unresolved.
As a result, of the two Lok Sabha constituencies in Manipur, the Outer Manipur seat went to polls in the first phase on Friday, and will also go to polls in the second phase on April 26.
