Three civilians were killed and several houses were damaged in an armed attack on a village in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district in the early hours of Friday, triggering fresh concerns over security in the region and prompting calls for a thorough investigation into the incident. According to reports, the attack took place at around 4 am at Loibol village under the New Keithelmanbi area of Kangpokpi district. Residents reported heavy firing from the locality during the incident, creating panic among villagers and forcing many to seek safety. The three deceased have been identified as Letkhongam Haokip, Tinmary Haokip and Jangminlal Haokip. Local sources said all three were residents of Loibol village. The circumstances leading to their deaths have not yet been officially disclosed.
Apart from the loss of lives, several houses in the village were reportedly damaged during the attack. Reports from the area indicated that a number of houses were set on fire, causing extensive damage to property. Villagers were forced to flee their homes as the violence unfolded. The full extent of the damage is yet to be assessed by authorities. Security forces were reportedly rushed to the area following the incident. Officials are said to be closely monitoring the situation to prevent any further escalation. However, authorities had not issued an official statement till the filing of this report regarding the circumstances surrounding the attack or the identity of those responsible. Meanwhile, Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), a prominent Kuki civil society organisation, strongly condemned the killings and expressed deep concern over the loss of civilian lives and destruction of property.
In a statement, KIM urged the Government of India and security agencies to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the incident. The organisation called on authorities to identify those responsible for the attack and ensure that appropriate legal action is taken against them.
