Manipur Police arrested a 23-year-old passenger after allegedly recovering around 420 grams of suspected ganja from his luggage during a random security check at Imphal Airport. In a separate operation, security forces recovered a cache of arms, ammunition and communication equipment from Imphal West district, officials said. According to the police, the passenger, identified as Herish Maibam, a resident of Singjamei Wangma Kshetri Leikai in Imphal East district, was intercepted on June 24 while preparing to board an outbound flight. The operation was carried out jointly by the Airport Police and personnel of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) as part of routine security screening at the airport.
During the inspection of his luggage, officials allegedly recovered around 420 grams of suspected ganja. The substance was seized, and the passenger was taken into custody for further questioning. Police said the seized material will undergo the required legal procedures as part of the investigation to determine its nature and origin. In another operation conducted on June 25, security forces recovered a cache of arms, ammunition and communication equipment from an isolated area located between Phayeng and Kharang Koireng/Tairenpokpi under the jurisdiction of Lamsang Police Station in Imphal West district.
According to officials, the recovered items included three AK-series rifles, one 9 mm pistol, four magazines, 37 rounds of live ammunition of different calibres and two Baofeng wireless radio handsets. No arrests have been reported in connection with the recovery so far. Police said the recovered weapons and equipment have been seized for forensic examination, and efforts are underway to identify those responsible for concealing them in the area. Investigators are also examining whether the recovered arms are linked to the activities of insurgent groups operating in the state.
