Goods trucks to Manipur stranded near Silchar as perishable cargo begins to rot

Hundreds of cargo trucks carrying essential commodities from Silchar to Manipur have remained stranded for the past several days due to the prevailing security situation in the neighbouring state, leaving transporters and truck operators facing growing financial losses.

A long line of eight-wheel and 12-wheel trucks has been parked along the Silchar–Jiribam road after authorities suspended the movement of goods vehicles as a precautionary measure amid the tense situation in Manipur. The suspension has disrupted the supply chain and affected the transport of essential goods to the state.

Truck drivers said their vehicles have been stationary for nearly a week, with many carrying perishable items such as fish and vegetables. As the delay continues, a large portion of the cargo has started to spoil, causing heavy losses to transporters and traders.

“The trucks have been parked here for almost seven days. Fish and vegetables are rotting inside the vehicles, and the losses are increasing every day,” one of the stranded drivers said.

Apart from the damaged cargo, drivers said they are facing difficulties in maintaining their vehicles after they have remained idle for such a long period. They expressed concern that prolonged parking could lead to mechanical problems, making it difficult to restart the trucks once movement resumes.

The transporters also pointed to the financial burden created by the disruption, saying they continue to bear expenses on fuel, vehicle maintenance and daily living while remaining stranded on the highway.
