The North East Students’ Organisation has called for urgent and meaningful action to end the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur, saying the continued unrest has exposed serious failures in governance and delayed efforts to restore peace in the troubled state. In a statement issued on Monday, NESO Chairman Samuel B. Jyrwa said both the state and Central governments have failed to effectively intervene and bring the prolonged crisis under control. He said the inability to restore normalcy after years of violence has raised deep concern across the Northeast region.Jyrwa said the organisation strongly believes that immediate, fair and transparent intervention is needed to stop further violence and prevent more loss of lives. He said those responsible for attacks and killings must be identified and brought to justice without delay so that public trust in the rule of law can be restored. The student body, which represents eight major student organisations from the Northeastern states, said repeated attacks on unarmed civilians have become a serious humanitarian issue. It said the violence has affected the basic right of people to live peacefully and safely.
According to the statement, the continuing conflict has left many families shattered and has created fear and uncertainty among communities living in the state. NESO expressed condolences to families who lost their loved ones in the violence and said the pain of the people of Manipur is being felt across the entire Northeast. Jyrwa said violence cannot solve the crisis and stressed that only dialogue, mutual respect and sincere efforts to address long-standing issues can help bring lasting peace. He said communities must come together and work towards reconciliation instead of allowing hatred and mistrust to grow further. The organisation also appealed to all groups and stakeholders in Manipur to show restraint and protect the values of humanity during this difficult period. NESO said peace and harmony should remain the top priority for everyone involved. Jyrwa noted that NESO and its member organisations had earlier carried out peace missions in Manipur in an effort to encourage understanding among different communities and support peaceful solutions. He said the organisation would continue such efforts in the interest of regional peace and stability.
He further said that restoring peace in Manipur is not just important for the state alone but is also a moral responsibility for all authorities and stakeholders. He urged governments and leaders to act with sincerity, urgency and accountability before the situation worsens further.Meanwhile, Tipra Motha Party chief Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma also spoke about the crisis during an interaction in Agartala on Monday. He said a section of politicians was responsible for deepening divisions and contributing to the ethnic violence in Manipur. Debbarma said members of the Meitei, Naga and Kuki-Zo communities must sit together and hold discussions to resolve their differences peacefully. He warned that continued hostility and violence would only damage the future of the state and create more suffering for ordinary people.
