The National Socialist Council of Nagalim (Isak-Muivah), or NSCN-IM, has denied any involvement in the deadly ambush on an Assam Rifles convoy in Manipur’s Ukhrul district that claimed the lives of two security personnel. The organisation said it remains committed to the ceasefire agreement with the Centre and the ongoing Indo-Naga peace process. In a statement issued on Tuesday, the outfit said the attack in the Nungshang Khong area had “no connection whatsoever” with the NSCN-IM. It was responding to reports that the ambush was allegedly carried out by an armed group suspected to be the breakaway “Eastern Flank” faction. The organisation stated that it was “neither involved in nor had any knowledge” of the incident. It also reaffirmed that it continues to honour the ceasefire agreement with the Government of India and strictly follows the agreed ground rules.
The NSCN-IM said it would “never resort to any action that could undermine, derail or sabotage the ongoing Indo-Naga political negotiations.” It added that securing an honourable and peaceful political settlement remains its firm commitment. The outfit also appealed to all stakeholders to act with restraint and responsibility, saying any action that disrupts the ongoing peace process could affect efforts towards a negotiated solution. The statement comes a day after suspected militants ambushed an Assam Rifles convoy in the Naga-majority Ukhrul district. The attack killed two personnel and left several others injured.
The two personnel who lost their lives were identified as Warrant Officer Balwant Singh and Havildar Chandra Mohan Singh. Director General of Assam Rifles Vikas Lakhera paid tribute to the soldiers, honouring their sacrifice in the line of duty.
