Security Tightened at RIMS as Hospital Distances Itself from Protest Controversy

The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Manipur has clarified that its role is strictly limited to providing healthcare services, stating that it has no involvement in patient transportation or the deployment of security personnel. The clarification came after unrest at the hospital campus following the treatment of three injured youths.

Tensions escalated on Monday when protests broke out within the hospital premises over allegations that the three patients under treatment were militants. The situation turned confrontational, prompting security forces to use tear gas and carry out a baton charge to disperse the gathering.

According to reports, the injured individuals, who belong to the Kuki community, were initially treated at the 183 Military Hospital in Leimakhong before being referred to RIMS for further medical care. They were transported to the institute under security escort.

In its official statement, RIMS emphasized that decisions related to patient transfer and security arrangements are handled by the concerned authorities, while the institute’s responsibility begins only once patients are admitted for treatment. It reiterated its commitment to medical ethics and humanitarian principles, stating that healthcare is provided to all individuals irrespective of background or circumstances.

The hospital administration also appealed for restraint, warning that disruptions within the campus could affect treatment services and endanger critically ill patients as well as healthcare workers.

In a separate statement, RIMS condemned the use of mock bombs and smoke devices inside the hospital complex during the protest, calling it a serious threat to hospital safety and operations. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as security remains tightened in and around the campus.
