Major Bhargab Kalita, a son of Assam from Rampur in South Kamrup and serving in the Indian Army, has been conferred the prestigious Shaurya Chakra by the President of India for displaying exemplary courage in an anti-terror operation in Jammu and Kashmir.
Major Bhargab Kalita of the 50th Battalion, Rashtriya Rifles, was presented the honour by President Droupadi Murmu at a solemn ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on June 8. The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, several Union ministers, the chiefs of the three armed forces, and many senior officers of the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force, along with several other distinguished guests.
Notably, Major Bhargab Kalita, who was posted to Jammu and Kashmir in October 2022, led a daring operation on December 2, 2024, in which three notorious Pakistan-sponsored terrorist leaders were killed. Similarly, four overground workers aiding the terrorists were apprehended alive in the operation. Major Bhargab Kalita displayed exceptional bravery during the operation, even risking his own life. As a result, the announcement to award him the Shaurya Chakra was made on Republic Day, January 26, this year.
It may be mentioned that Major Bhargab Kalita’s father, Bhaskar Kalita, also served in the Army for a long period and retired in December 2022 from the post of Major General, considered the third-highest rank in the Indian Army. He has been serving as a member of the Assam Public Service Commission for the past three years.
