Manipur CM welcomes release of 14 hostages, calls for peace and an end to violence

Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Tuesday welcomed the safe release of 14 hostages and described the development as a positive humanitarian gesture at a time when the state continues to face social and security challenges. The Chief Minister expressed gratitude to all those who played a role in securing the release of the hostages and acknowledged the efforts made by various stakeholders in facilitating their safe return. In particular, Singh appreciated the contribution of Naga civil society groups, saying their role in ensuring the hostages’ release demonstrated compassion, responsibility and concern for human life. He said such actions help strengthen trust among communities and highlight the importance of humanitarian values during difficult times.

“The safe release of the hostages is a welcome development and reflects the spirit of humanity and collective responsibility,” the Chief Minister said. He added that initiatives aimed at protecting lives and reducing tensions contribute positively to efforts for peace and reconciliation. The 14 hostages, who belonged to the Kuki community, were released earlier on Tuesday after being held for several weeks. Their release has been viewed by many as a significant step towards easing tensions in parts of the state that have witnessed unrest and inter-community strains in recent months. Appealing for calm, the Chief Minister urged all sections of society to reject violence and work together to restore peace and normalcy in Manipur. He said the prolonged crisis has caused immense hardship to many families and communities and stressed the need for collective efforts to prevent further suffering.

“The violence has brought pain and loss to many innocent people. It is important that every section of society comes together to promote peace, understanding and coexistence,” he said. Reiterating the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order, Singh assured that strict action would be taken against those involved in unlawful activities. He said the government remains committed to ensuring justice and that the law would take its course without exception. The Chief Minister also emphasized that lasting peace can only be achieved through cooperation, dialogue and respect for the rule of law. He urged community leaders, civil society organisations and citizens to contribute positively towards rebuilding trust and strengthening harmony among different groups.
