WhatsApp has begun rolling out username reservations, introducing a new feature that will allow users to connect without sharing their phone numbers. While the full username system is not yet live, eligible users in select regions can now reserve unique usernames ahead of a wider global rollout expected later this year.
Under the upcoming system, users will be able to share a username instead of their phone number when starting a conversation. Unlike social media platforms, WhatsApp will not offer a public directory or username suggestions, meaning users must know the exact username to initiate contact.
The platform is also introducing an optional “username key” feature. If enabled, first-time messages sent via username will require an additional key before a chat can begin, adding an extra layer of privacy and security. However, a phone number will still remain mandatory for account creation, and usernames will only serve as an alternative contact method.
Users will be able to reserve or manage usernames through the app once the feature is available by updating WhatsApp and navigating to Settings > Account > Username. Notifications will be sent when the option becomes active in their region.
Meta Platforms also plans to allow businesses, creators, and organisations to claim consistent usernames across Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp to strengthen brand identity across its ecosystem.
The rollout of username reservations marks a significant step toward enhancing privacy and improving user control over personal contact details.
