The World Hypertension Day, 2026 was observed yesterday at the General OPD Complex of the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, under the theme, “Controlling Hypertension Together.”
The observance was attended by the Director of RIMS, Professor G.Sunil Kumar Sharma, along with Medical Superintendent Prof.N.Sanjib Singh, Head of the Medicine Department Dr. Chongtham Dhanaraj Singh, and Prof. Y.Govindaraj Singh, Nodal Officer, SAP/Kaya Kalp.
Prof, Sharma described hypertension as a “silent killer” that affects vital organs of the human body, including the brain and kidneys. He expressed the importance of regular blood pressure monitoring, adherence to medication, exercise, and a balanced low-salt diet. He also noted that hypertension affects around 1.4 billion individuals worldwide. It has also affected nearly 220 million people in India alone, he added.
During the programme, a free health screening camp was also held, offering tests for ECG, blood pressure, and blood-sugar, along with distribution of medicines to patients at free of cost. The programme was also attended by faculty members, nurses, departmental heads,and staff of the hospital.
