Tension Escalates in Kangpokpi After Abandoned Village Set Ablaze

Tension escalated in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district after an abandoned village was set on fire by unidentified miscreants on Thursday afternoon, triggering a fresh security concern in the area.

The incident occurred at Kharam Vaiphei village, located behind the National Sports University, at around 2:30 pm. According to intelligence inputs, the abandoned village was reportedly being used as an unauthorized camp by the Kuki National Front (KNFP).

Sources said the arson attack led to a heavy exchange of fire between cadres of the KNFP and the Kuki Liberation Army (KLA) in the surrounding area. Preliminary reports suggest that KLA cadres may have been involved in the incident, although officials have not yet issued a formal confirmation.

Meanwhile, some local groups alleged that Tangkhul militants associated with the National Socialist Council of Nagalim-Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) were responsible for setting the village on fire. These claims could not be independently verified.

Following reports of intense gunfire, security forces rushed additional personnel to the area and intensified surveillance to prevent further escalation. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and efforts are underway to secure the affected zone.

The latest incident comes amid an already fragile security situation in the region. The area recently witnessed the killing of three senior tribal church leaders, including Reverend Vumthang Sitlhou, President of the Thadou Baptist Association, who were ambushed on May 13.

Security agencies have launched an investigation into the latest incident, and further details are awaited.
