Manipur is grappling with a wave of civil unrest as authorities confirmed on Monday the arrest of 21 individuals involved in violent clashes that erupted during a protest rally in the Imphal West district two days ago. The situation remains tense across the state, with security forces working to maintain order amid widespread public demonstrations.
The violence originated on April 18, during a torch rally organized by various civil society organizations to protest the tragic death of two children in a recent bomb attack. What began as a peaceful demonstration quickly escalated into chaos along the Imphal-Jiribam road. According to a statement released by the police, protesters turned aggressive, pelting stones and hurling petrol bombs at security personnel. The confrontation resulted in injuries to three personnel of the 232 Battalion of the CRPF, alongside significant damage to security vehicles.
In a concurrent move to curb the spread of misinformation and hate speech, law enforcement also arrested a 23-year-old man from Imphal East. Officials identified the suspect as a member of the Arambai Tenggol (AT) organization, stating that he was taken into custody for making provocative remarks on social media aimed at inciting further violence.
The unrest did not remain contained to the events of April 18. On Sunday evening, April 20, thousands of protesters took to the streets across several valley districts, continuing to demand justice for the victims of the bomb attack. Demonstrations were reported in Koirengei and Hatta Golpati in Imphal East, as well as in Kakching and Mayai Lambi in Imphal West.
The situation necessitated firm intervention by security forces at multiple locations, including Uripok, Khabam Lamkhai, and Kakching town, where protesters clashed with personnel. Police were forced to fire tear gas shells to disperse the crowds and bring the escalating situation under control.
State authorities have issued a stern warning, emphasizing that any attempts to disturb communal harmony or incite violence will be met with strict legal action. As the investigation into the initial mob violence continues, the administration remains on high alert, urging citizens to refrain from activities that compromise public safety. The coming days will be critical in determining whether the state can return to normalcy amidst the ongoing demands for accountability and justice.
